Outdoor Education Weekend
Are you ready to expand your outdoor knowledge? Join us at OUTDOOR EDUCATION WEEKEND for a fun & comprehensive weekend of experiential learning. You and your fellow outdoor enthusiasts will learn and grow through programs that interest you! There will be certifications for special skills, our basic outdoor skills training, and 1 hour classes to expand your knowledge. Come get lost with us! 

This class is for adults and helps leaders provide programming for Troops going outdoors! 

Participants will have the option to come and spend the night, enjoy camp fires and connect with other Girl Scout Leaders, Volunteers, and Outdoor Trainers! Don’t want to spend the night? No Problem! You can register for the days only, you can come Saturday and/or Sunday, and choose the workshops that best fit your schedule and outdoor needs! Additional fees apply to some workshops. Be sure to sign up for courses you want to attend!

Small Craft Safety Challenge 10:00am-11:00am or 2:00pm-3:00pm
Note: First Aid-CPR will now be offered as a joint, blended class. There will be material to review and study at home before Outdoor Education Weekend.

Packing list for Outdoor Education Weekend:

  • Your own food for lunch and overnight (those attending Blended Outdoor Skills – lunch is provided)
  • Sanitization supplies (sanitation supplies will be provided but it is recommended you bring your own)
  • Mess kit
  • Water bottle
  • Camp chair
  • Masks (paper masks and gloves will be provided but it is recommended you bring your own)
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug Spray
  • Pen and paper to take notes
  • A tote or backpack to carry everything
  • Long pants and closed shoes are required at all times, unless you are taking part in the boating class.

Learn how to safely handle a bow and arrow around your Girls. Level 1 Instructors are well prepared to teach beginner archery programs to people of all ages and abilities in a variety of both indoor and outdoor settings in the disciplines of target, field or 3-D archery. The Level 1 Instructor will learn about range safety, range setup, the steps of shooting, equipment and repair, programs and lesson plans.

Do you know your Small Craft Safety rules or have already taken Small Craft Safety and just need to re-certify yourself? This challenge course is a great option! Skills will not be reviewed in this course. You will complete a written test and a live skills demonstration. If you receive an 80% or better on the challenge, you will receive a certificate from GSNENY stating your proficiency in boating safety. Also – expect to get wet! It is a recommended prerequisite that you have previously earned a Small Craft Safety Certification. Your trainer is Chancey Young! Supplies: Must bring water shoes & swimwear.

Come and learn how to safely handle a canoe or a kayak – or both! Make sure your Girls are safe in the water with this 5-hour course. Participants should have some experience with either kayaks or canoes. Basic handling skills required; paddling skills will not be taught in this class. You will receive a certificate from GSNENY stating your proficiency in boating safety. Also – expect to get wet! You will be rolling your boat to practice what to do if your boat tips over. This certificate is required if you want to go boating with your Girls.

You will be provided self study material that you MUST review prior to the class.  You will review most of the material online prior to the course and only review hands-on skills during the live session. There will be time for questions from the online material and time to practice skills. There is a test that will be required for certification.

If you receive an 80% or better on the challenge, you will earn a certification in First Aid & CPR, certifications are valid for 2 years, accredited by the American Red Cross. You will have the option to take the written test online prior to live test to ensure you will pass.

Also, learn about health and safety procedures, outdoor living skills, proper dress for outdoors, menu planning with recipes and types of outdoor equipment is needed as you learn how to lead girls to actively participate. This is a Blended Learning Course.  Participants will be required to read a short handbook prior to attending this course. This training booklet will be emailed to you. After taking this course, you will be qualified and prepared to take your own troop camping, involving overnight camping-including campfires and so much more!

Come play with your food - and fire too!   This is where you get to experiment over a campfire without your hungry troop watching!    You'll learn how to cook with sticks, pots, paper cups, oranges, foil, cans, cardboard boxes, Dutch Ovens and more.  Note any allergies/accommodations on your form.

Leave No Trace is a set of outdoor ethics promoting conservation in the outdoors. It consists of seven principles.  Learn these principles to help the environment and learn how to teach these principles to the Girls in fun and easy ways!

This class is for new Encampment Directors. You will learn to plan, implement and evaluate a Service Unit Encampment. This is a requirement for all Service Unit Encampments. Prerequisites: Blended Outdoor Skills or approved equivalency OR highest Outdoor training from your prior Council, as well as Site Orientation, experience with a large event that involved some area of responsibility and experience camping with groups of children as leader or camp counselor. People who have had previous Encampment Director Training do NOT need to attend this class.   Participants will receive the Encampment Director Resource Guide. Scheduling an Encampment event is based upon procedure, availability of property, all applicable fees and compliance with certification.
